Red Wing is one of the scenic communities on the upper Mississippi River with a population of 16,459, according to the 2010 US Census. The town is the seat of Minnesota’s Goodhue County and is considered a unique historical community with “impressive architecture and enviable natural environment,” according to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The town was named for Dakota Sioux chief, Tatanka Mani or Shakea, who was known to Europeans as Red Wing for the distinctive dyed swan wings worn by the tribe’s leaders. Because of Red Wing’s loyalty to Americans over the British in the nation’s early days, the federal government established a Mdewakanton Sioux Indian reservation in 1889, and the town grew up around it.

Today, visitors can celebrate this early history at local museums, as well as state parks like Frontenac State Park, which offers beautiful views of the local area and the great Mississippi River from tall bluffs. There is a lot of fun to be had along the river with fishing and birding tours, including bald eagle viewing tours. The town is also the original home of Red Wing boots and contains their flagship store and museum which features the World’s Largest Boot.
